About Mindy
Mindy Badin is a pedestrian safety advocate whose work began after the death of her son Brett, who was killed while crossing Rockville Pike in January 2020. He was 32 years old. The loss altered the course of Mindy’s life. In the years that followed, she has testified to state and local lawmakers in support of bills to improve roadway safety. She has described her grief as inseparable from her advocacy, and notes that every policy victory is bittersweet. Each is a reminder of progress and loss.
Mindy is a member of SafeRoadsMD and the Montgomery County chapter of Families for Safe Streets. She is the chair of the Transportation Committee of the Greater Olney Civic Association.
Mindy played a role in advocating for the Safe Streets Act of 2023, a Montgomery County Law aimed at improving safety for pedestrians and bicyclists. She also advocated for the Sergeant Patrick Kepp Act, a Maryland law strengthening the penalties for reckless and aggressive driving. In addition, she has testified for laws for increased penalties for excessive speeding, for expanded use of speed, red light, and crosswalk cameras, and for strengthening public transportation. Her advocacy is characterized by a combination of data-driven arguments and deeply personal storytelling, as she relates the human cost behind the legislation.
Each year Mindy speaks to the Montgomery County Vision Zero Youth Ambassadors, high school students with a keen interest in becoming the next generation of roadway safety leaders. She is grateful to have won the 2023 Greater Olney Civic Association Contribution to Community Award, and in 2026 was one of 31 women chosen as a winner of the Montgomery County Women Making History Award.
In her spare time, Mindy plays the flute in the Olney Concert Band and in Flutes on the Brink, leads a Bone Builders class, chairs the annual Olney Community Shred, and is an enthusiast of samurai sudoku and jigsaw puzzles. She graduated from Rutgers College with a degree in Computer Science, and has coded for GPS (Global Positioning System). Mindy lives in Olney with her husband Joe and in addition to her son Brett, she has 2 daughters.
